Week 34

Andrew has five weeks off between semesters and he has been busy!  Not only did he spend a week in Washington, but he has been spending all of his free time doing things around the house to get ready for Baby Girl.

He took our crib over to our friends, the Malones, so that he would have a little room to spread out and get it sanded and painted.
All sanded and ready for some paint!
Andrew picked a sunny day to work on the crib at the Malones!
On New Year’s Eve, we both went over to finish painting the crib together and found that Chris and Lauren had painted it as a surprise for us!  We were so touched!  Our friends have been such a blessing in our lives and truly an answer to our prayers.

With Andrew now in grad school, we have definitely had to find ways to save on the expenses of a new baby.  We really puzzled over how we could do this.  All of our prayers for many months revolved around finding ways to provide for our little girl.  It was especially hard on me, I think, because I am a planner and this baby was not fitting into our budget!  I couldn’t see HOW we were going to make financial ends meet.  We were stretched even thinner at this time as I did not have health insurance and we were paying cash for all of my prenatal care—as in thousands of dollars worth of prenatal care.  More than a few tears were shed as we agonized over this.

But just as we have discovered time and time again, Heavenly Father will answer our prayers.  And He answers them with an outpouring that we can hardly contain.

In the middle of December, my visiting teacher, Jess Shorter, dropped off two large tubs and a garbage bag full of baby items that she no longer needed.  That same week, Lauren Malone dropped off another bin of clothes.  January 1, after many, many phone calls, Andrew got us signed up for health insurance.  The first Sunday in January, we received a Facebook message from a family in the Lynchburg second ward that had a stroller they no longer needed.  And it hasn’t stopped.  I receive daily phone calls, texts, Facebook messages, etc. of things that people want to pass along to us.  What a blessing!  Our nursery is now overflowing with generous gifts from friends and family and the burden on our shoulders has been lifted!

We are thankful to our Father in Heaven who is ever mindful of our needs and know that HE WILL PROVIDE.  We are grateful to be surrounded by a Church family that acts as His servants and has ministered to our family.  Their sensitivity to the promptings of the Spirit on our behalf, have touched our lives and strengthened our testimonies.

Christmas!!!

Before Andrew left for Seattle, we were able to get a Christmas tree up.  It was beautiful!  We even got lights this year.  Andrew picked out these colored lights that have 16 different flash settings.  A little much for me and I got a little queasy as we tried them out but Andrew was SO EXCITED about them.  As per his family’s tradition, we listened to The Chipmunks’ Christmas album as we decorated the tree.
Christmas morning, Andrew and I slept in as long as we possibly could!  We knew this would be our last time in FOREVER that we would be able to have a lazy Christmas morning and so we took full advantage of it.
Andrew made a yummy Christmas breakfast and we read Luke 2 together.  Then we opened up all of our fun gifts.  It was wonderful!
Baby Girl got her first ornament from Nana and Poppa!

Week 33

This week brought some heart-wrenching news for us.  Tom’s sister, Aunt Nancy, has been having severe headaches this past week.  She went to her regular doctor three times with little result.  Finally, her daughter took her to the ER where an MRI was performed.  They found an inoperable brain tumor on her left frontal lobe that is the size of an adult fist.  Due to its size and proximity, her speech, gait, memory, etc. are affected.  Our hearts are broken!

Thankfully, Andrew is done with finals for the school year.  It was a tremendous blessing that he was able to fly home and be with his family as they all gathered together for the holidays.  He flew out early Tuesday morning and was able to stay for a week.  He had many wonderful experiences with his family and because I know what a huge support he is to me, I am sure he was an amazing source of peace and strength to the rest of his family at that time as well.

We live day to day at this time awaiting any news on Nancy’s condition and constantly praying for her and the many doctors attending to her at this tender time.

In other news about Little Miss Baby Girl, she continues to be a source of delight to Andrew and me.

On Sunday, the children in Nursery finally seemed to comprehend that I was having a baby.  I go in to sing songs with them for about fifteen minutes every Sunday.  One of the older boys had been told by his mother that they were giving me a special blanket for my baby at an upcoming baby shower.  He must have passed along the news because all of the kids were so excited to touch my belly as I came in for singing time.  Little Xander Leech put his little arms around me and gave my belly a big kiss.  He proudly told his mom, “There’s a baby in there!”  Joshua Penrod looked at me and asked, “Can we see your baby?” as he looked me up and down.  I was afraid he was going to lift my skirt to sneak a peek!!!  And Pailyn Harris delighted in pushing my outtie back in for me only to see it pop back out.

At work on Monday, I had a patient that needed a three-month evaluation post-SRP and a periodontal maintenance appointment.  It’s kind of an intense, uncomfortable hour at the dentist.  But this man was in really good spirits and happily “hummed” (?) along to the office Christmas music as I worked on him.  I don’t know how he managed to with the water from the Cavitron instrument and both of my hands in his mouth but he was just “singing” (?) away.  I believe the tune was Frosty the Snowman.  The funny thing about this story was that Baby Girl would start dancing in my tummy as he would sing and then stop when he stopped.  After about three or four rounds of this, I told him how much Baby Girl seemed to like his singing.  We had a good laugh!

Week 32

32 Weeks!!!
This week, Andrew and I participated in our ward’s original Christmas musical “Picture A Christmas.”  We were thrilled to play the parts of Mary (because I am pregnant) and Joseph (because Andrew is the only guy in the ward with a beard—they ended up double-casting him as Jesus as well!)  It brought back many memories of my time growing up in the Champaign First Ward and performing each Christmas with David & Charis Duke.

I think since we are expecting Baby Girl, it made the story of the birth of the Savior even more poignant to us.  I was definitely teary as we performed but at the same time, I understood what absolute JOY Mary must have felt as a new mother.  It was an incredible experience for our family!

At Church the next day, little Rachel Bingham tapped me on the shoulder to get my attention.  “That was a wonderful play last night!” she said.  Then she looked at me quizzically and looked at my tummy before asking skeptically, “Was that your real baby that you were holding?”

Week 31

Another doctor’s visit this week and Baby Girl & I passed with flying colors!  Up to 21 pounds gained in total.  And heart rate for Baby Girl was 160 again.  What a strong, healthy heart she has!

I have had heartburn return in a serious way.  Not popping Tums yet but mostly because I keep forgetting to pick them up at the store and I’m all out.

We found out this week that Curt & Vanessa are going to be having a BOY cousin join us in April.  We can’t wait!  I imagine he will be playing a lot of Barbies with the “triplets” or finding ways to harass the three of them concurrently.  It is so fun to have four babies on the way at the same time in our family.

This week was emotional as far as physical changes.  I found what I thought was a stretch mark on my side and started crying.  Andrew was really surprised that I reacted that way and I guess I was as well.  I know that these are changes that happen but I had a hard time facing the reality.  When I went back to check the mark in an hour, it had disappeared and I realized that my t-shirt had just made a red impression on my side.  Duh.

Then I was convinced that I had found two varicose veins on my legs.  Gave it a few days and those disappeared as well.  Just bruises.

But the apparent physical changes have really put me on an emotional roller coaster.  I wish that wasn’t the case but it’s true.  I knew that my body would change but I guess you can never fully prepare for these things.

Baby Girl has become increasingly sensitive to sound.  For many weeks, she has reacted when I hop in the shower and the water hits my belly.  So I like to warn her before turning the water on.  At about 25 or 26 weeks I started singing some songs to her at night that I hope she will begin to associate with our nighttime routine.  But it’s not working anymore.  Now she seems to get more excited when I sing.  So back to the drawing board with that idea.

And a funny little story from this week:

I was using our food processor to make all the elements for Chicken Pita Sandwiches.  The first time I turned it on, she jumped like crazy!  I had woken her from her morning nap.  So I started talking to her and rubbing my belly to warn her each time I was going to use the food processor.  She seemed to do better.  But after a ten-minute break, I forgot to warn her again before turning it on and I startled her again.  Poor thing!

Week 30 and Thanksgiving Break!

We hit the thirty-week mark over Thanksgiving break!

Before we left, I quickly snapped a few photos of our Thanksgiving décor including the embroidered bread cover from my mom, our new apothecary jars (Andrew is a big fan of the easy access to candy), and the S'mores Thanksgiving ornaments from my mom.

For Thanksgiving this year, we drove out to Indiana to visit with my family for a week.  It was a long, back-straining 10-hour drive for me and Baby Girl.  She just couldn’t find a comfortable spot and moved around the entire tire.  And my back began protesting at about the seven-hour mark.  I brought along a heated back wrap that I wore and I think it helped but the ride was just TOO LONG for a pregnant woman, I’ve decided.

It was fun to be with Mom and Dad for the holidays.  Everyone was able to make it into town except for Sarah’s family and we missed them TREMENDOUSLY.  I was convinced they were going to show up and surprise us all up until we got Instagram photos of them the night before in New Mexico.  Curt and Vanessa are already in West Lafayette while Curt gets his MBA.  Lisa is living with Mom and Dad right now as she gets settled in her teaching job.  Cole and Emily made it into town from Murfreesboro about fifteen minutes after we did late Friday night.  And Kyle and Ashley’s family drove up from Florida late Thanksgiving night.

Andrew found us cheap tickets to the Notre Dame vs. BYU football game in South Bend the day after we arrived.  We met our friends, Dan and Alicia Ditto, up there and had a great time catching up with them and walking around the campus.

Notre Dame is a great campus to visit!  They have a little brochure that they pass out with all of their tailgating activities and we were able to tour some of the most popular spots, listen to a group of bagpipers, see the team on their way in to the stadium, listen to the marching band, etc. at different locations around campus.  We had a great time!

The game was freezing cold!  Andrew and I wore long johns and bundled up in all of our heavy duty gear to combat the 9-degree weather complete with blowing snow.  It helped that they packed us into the stands tightly.  We had grabbed several blankets from my parents’ house and wrapped up in those as well which turned out to be the difference-maker between enjoying the game and freezing our butts off.

The game was frustrating with BYU losing 13-23.  The offensive play-calling had me hollering for Robert Anae’s job (what game this season hasn’t?!)  But the Notre Dame fans were very gracious and friendly both at the stadium and around town.  So we had a great time despite it all.

It was awesome to be in the house with four preggos.  There was a lot of baby talk as we compared symptoms, shared birth plans, talked baby gear, etc.  Vanessa wasn’t getting a lot of consistent movement from her little baby at that point (she felt the baby move for the first time the day of our baby shower) but Emily and I have little movers & shakers on our hands and it was fun for me to see that our babies were usually active around the same times.

Andrew took me shopping for maternity clothes during the week.  Up to this point I had resisted because I wanted to wait until I really needed to spend the money.  Here are my tricks to getting by without maternity clothes until week 30:
·         Knit leggings—I had a ton of these from last winter and they are working great.  I gave up on jeans altogether about 8 weeks ago.
·         Belly Bandz—I have four of these and they elongate my normal shirts so I wear them all the time.
·         Wonder Tees from Downeast Basics—I love that these shirts are so stretchy and so long.  I had these pre-pregnancy and I am so happy that I can still wear them.  The white ones are a little thin so I have to layer a tank top underneath but the black and beige ones are perfect!
·         Sperrys—Andrew bought me a pair of gold top-siders this summer and they are my most comfy, slip-on shoes!  And so far, my feet haven’t gotten too wide for them.  Hopefully, my feet don’t grow!!!!
·         Long cardigans—these are the perfect layering item and they give my shapely shape a little more definition.
·         Maxi dresses—I really stocked up on these before I knew I was expecting hoping that I could wear them for the first half of my pregnancy without anyone getting suspicious.  As it is, I don’t think I will have to buy any new dresses for my pregnancy.

I had bought two maternity t-shirts from H&M on a trip to DC this summer and one of my co-workers had given me a brand-new maternity top that her daughter had never worn (it still had the tags on it!) and so those were also in rotation as well.  But after our little shopping spree, I have plenty of sweaters and tops to see me through the last quarter (!) of my pregnancy.

And while I am at it, let me just brag on how great my husband is.  I love him so much!  I know it was hard for him to be away from his family for the holidays—especially since we won’t be seeing them when they all get together for Christmas.  But he has been such a trooper and so happy just to be with OUR FAMILY as he likes to say.

He was always willing to go pick up Pooma and bring her over to the house, sit down and play with nieces and nephews (LEGOS, read books, etc.), stay up late to determine the Texas Hold ‘Em Champion, and after the pregnant wives turned in, he was game for a few rounds of old school Nintendo 64.  One morning, my mom woke up and he had gotten all of the bread ready for her turkey dressing sometime during the night.  I am glad that he is my husband and that we are a forever family, but this vacation made me realize how thankful I am that he is part of my family’s forever as well.

We had a great Thanksgiving holiday.  It’s so nice to be surrounded by family and watch football and eat such good food!  Andrew made a homemade pumpkin pie with real pumpkin that was the first dessert to go.  I was rather proud of him for that accomplishment.  He said he couldn’t have done it without Mom’s pie crust so thanks for making the crust, Mom!  He also made his family’s holiday Jell-O and I made Pooma’s baked corn casserole and a cranberry relish that is an awesome recipe but for some reason, it didn’t quite turn out.

Such good food but no room in my shrinking tummy to pack it in so I did end up throwing up after dinner.  TMI and really sad!  But generally my nausea has subsided and I only have trouble about once or twice a week now.  And I am getting better about staying up later without getting sick.  Hallelujah.

We missed Grandma Martin who was recovering from a bronchoscopy and Sarah’s family as they were in New Mexico.

The next day was the big baby shower for “The Quads” as we are calling these four cousins.  It started out as “The Triplets” (especially since they were all girls) but we had to upgrade the name with Curt and Vanessa’s announcement.  We had a fairy tale theme and Mom, Lisa, Aunt Jenny, and Emily’s mom, Judy, did all of the work.  It was so much fun!  It felt like Christmas with all of the fun gifts that we received.  We were overwhelmed by the generosity of so many and so many at once especially.  I know it isn’t cheap to buy for four!

Our gift to the other girl cousins was matching newborn bracelets that I fell in love with on Pinterest.  I contacted the seller and she made three and shipped them to me very quickly.  I think they are darling but, unfortunately, we didn't get a photo of the bracelets together.

After the baby shower, the four of us moms-to-be went downtown for a maternity photo shoot.  Emily’s sister, Cathy, took the photos and Vanessa posed us.  We had a blast!  I am so glad that we captured this moment in time with all of us pregnant together.  We stopped at a cafĂ© for hot cocoa afterwards to just relax together.

(As soon as the photos are edited by Vanessa, I will post them.  I tried to coax one or two out of here a little early to no avail!)

All in all, it was a terrific visit! We were so happy to be in Indiana and to have such a nice, long visit.  It is such a blessing when we can all get together like that!

Week 29

Andrew and I asked my sister-in-law, Vanessa, to take some family photos of us during Thanksgiving break.  Andrew is such a good sport about all of the pictures I make him take.  It was a fun way to document Week 29 with Baby Girl.

Vanessa is based out of West Lafayette, Indiana and you can check out her work online or on Facebook by searching for Pearl Photo & Design.

Here is a preview of some of the photos from this session.  We will post more as we get them!

Week 28

This week I had another check with Dr. Cherian at Women’s Health Center.  Baby Girl is measuring right on track with my/her(?) fundal height at 28 cm.  My blood pressure is still high every time I have it taken at the doctor’s office and this week was no exception: 132/77.  It’s normal if I check it anywhere else.  I have gained 19 pounds but I try not to think about it too much.  Baby Girl’s heart rate was 160 (probably thanks to the yummy orange drink I had to take to screen for gestational diabetes.)  I passed PS!  I have to admit that I was a little worried with the amount of chocolate I have been consuming during my pregnancy.  My hemoglobin was 13.1 which means no iron-deficiency anemia.  Hooray!

Switching gears, I wanted to share some anecdotes from Primary.  I really love my calling!  I had no idea I would enjoy teaching Singing Time so much.

Below is an email I received from Natasha Manning.  Her son Grant is in Nursery and Haven is a Sunbeam.

“Thanks so much for all you do to teach the kids these beautiful Primary songs.  The other Sunday after Church, Grant was singing to the top of his lungs, ‘Book of Mormons in the sky...’  I guess you all had been singing Book of Mormon Stories and Twinkle, Twinkle!  And the other day Haven was singing, ‘I know when I am baptized, my lungs are washed away.’  I busted up laughing!”

And the other night we went over to play games with Chris and Lauren Malone and Lauren was telling me that her boys, Ethan and Tanner, who are six and four were singing “For Health And Strength” at the top of their lungs nonstop on the way home from Church that week.

It makes me laugh to hear those stories!
